I got curious about who has the highest runs in ODI cricket after watching highlights last night. Thought I knew this stuff, but turns out I was totally behind on the latest records.
Starting My Search
Grabbed my coffee first thing this morning and opened the laptop. Typed “current highest ODI run record holder” straight into the search bar. Scrolled past old articles from 2017 talking about Martin Guptill’s 237 – knew that wasn’t recent anymore.
The Real Digging
Found this cricket stats page showing top 10 innings. Scrolled down past Chris Gayle’s 215 and MS Dhoni’s 183. Then saw Rohit Sharma’s name three times in the top five! His 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 popped up at #1.
Double-checked multiple sites to confirm. Latest stats all agreed – Rohit Sharma holds the men’s record at 264 runs from that Kolkata match. Still unbeaten for nearly a decade! Mind blown realizing he made 200 then kept going for 60+ more.
Women’s Record Surprise
Almost closed the tab when I wondered about women’s cricket. New search showed Amelia Kerr from New Zealand smashing 232 against Ireland in 2018. Bigger shock? She was only 17 years old! Kid broke Belinda Clark’s 21-year-old record while still in high school.
Found footage of her innings – girl was reverse-sweeping boundaries like it was backyard cricket. Insane composure.
Cross-Verification
- Compared official ICC stats sheets with three cricket databases
- Checked dates: Rohit (Nov 2014), Kerr (June 2018)
- Confirmed neither record broken in recent series
Final Tally
So here’s the deal as of today:
- Men’s ODI Record: Rohit Sharma – 264 runs
- Women’s ODI Record: Amelia Kerr – 232 runs
Left my laptop feeling smarter but also embarrassed – been telling mates Viv Richards’ 189 was unbeatable for years. Time to update my cricket trivia!
